Digital Technology Skills will contribute to an upcoming GreenShift webinar examining how Europe’s transport sector can move artificial intelligence and high-performance computing from individual pilot projects into practical, everyday use.

Taking place online on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, “From AI Pilots to Real Impact: Building the Skills Transport Needs Next” will bring together perspectives from transport, technology, research and workforce development.

Digital Technology Skills Human Capital Strategist Carmel Somers will present findings from GreenShift’s industry research, exploring the capabilities organisations need to translate advanced technology into better transport outcomes.

Moving AI in Transport Beyond the Pilot Stage

Artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and advanced data technologies have the potential to transform transport and mobility. Their applications extend from predictive maintenance and automated mobility to emissions modelling, smarter batteries and real-time transport optimisation.

However, GreenShift’s Market Needs Analysis points to a considerable gap between interest in these technologies and their operational adoption.

Across the organisations surveyed, 82.7% remained at an early or intermediate stage of AI and digital maturity. Only 17.2% had established AI as a strategic and embedded organisational capability.

Internal skills shortages were identified by 57% of respondents, while 52% cited difficulties integrating new technologies with existing systems. The evidence suggests that progress depends on more than access to technology or specialist technical expertise.

Transport organisations also need people who can connect AI, data and computing with operational knowledge, sustainability, governance and organisational decision-making.

Bringing Transport, Technology and Skills Perspectives Together

The webinar will be hosted by Jeff Sheridan, Founder of Matrix, and will feature contributions from across the GreenShift consortium and the wider transport ecosystem.

Prof. Horacio González-Vélez of National College of Ireland will introduce GreenShift and its work to create new learning pathways for green digital innovation in transport.

John McSweeney, CCAM Expert and Manager for Knowledge and Innovation at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), will explore developments in automated mobility.

Piotr Duszyński, AWS IoT Solution Architect at Transition Technologies, will examine how smarter battery technologies can support greener transport.

Following Carmel Somers’ presentation of the industry research, the speakers will come together for a panel discussion and audience Q&A.
